Welcome to Main St Funk
Founded in 2007 by sisters Kristie, Carla, and Chloe, Main St Funk was created with a vision to provide a space where every child feels seen, supported, and celebrated. What began as a few hip-hop classes in the Thomastown Library Community Rooms (on Main St, hence the name!) quickly grew into something bigger than they ever imagined. Today, Main St Funk offers high quality dance classes across 6 days a week in hip hop, jazz, ballet, contemporary, and acrobatics, welcoming dancers of all ages and abilities.
With a focus on both quality and fun, Main St Funk balances a progressive dance education with a pressure-free environment. Every student is treated as an equal, and everyone gets the chance to shine. Throughout the year, dancers have exciting performance opportunities, and the end-of-year concert is always a spectacular, professional, and unforgettable experience for all.
Whether dance is a passion, a creative outlet, or simply a place to have fun, Main St Funk is where young dancers feel confident, celebrated, and at home.
Because here, there’s an orange spot for everyone.
Mission Statement
“Main St Funk exists to excite and empower our students to dance their hearts out and reach their fullest potential. We provide a high-quality dance education that embraces all learning types and experience levels in an environment that is happy, uplifting and welcoming to all. We inspire our students to take up space, move fearlessly and live boldly and we remind them that no matter their background in dance or in life, at Main St Funk, they belong. Our mission is to create a generation of dancers who carry confidence, creativity, and joy both on and off the dance floor.”
Core Values
01
Dancing is our happy place
At Main St Funk we teach dance with kindness and care, ensuring a positive and uplifting dance adventure for all. We are excited to share the joy of dance with children, teens and young adults alike and every day, we offer new opportunities and interactions that create friendships, positive body image, a strong sense of self and achievement and most important of all, genuine happiness. We promote a culture of community where every dancer and their family feel valued and seen and when they walk through our studio doors, they feel at home. There is an orange spot for everyone at Main St Funk.
02
Let kids be kids
Main St Funk prioritises the development of the whole child by setting realistic expectations and understanding childhood development. We pride ourselves on making music, costuming and choreography choices that are age and developmentally appropriate, exciting and engaging. We meet each of our dancers where they’re at and gently guide them to reach new heights at their own pace, using safe dance practices. We are only kids once, so let’s dance to the cheesy songs, wear the cutesy costumes, use our imaginations and lose ourselves in the music.
03
Best foot forward
At Main St Funk we motivate our students to work towards their truest potential. We expect our dancers to always try their best while acknowledging that their “best” can be different day to day. We empower our students to take ownership of their dancing journey by showing up to the studio as their best selves. As a dancer, this looks like, correct uniform, hair and presentation, a positive attitude, being prepared for class and embodying a strong work ethic.
04
Be their best not the best
Main St Funk is a non-competitive school, both in and out of the studio. We encourage our students to focus on their own journey – while it is valuable to be inspired by our peers, we are all on different paths that cannot be compared. We celebrate all achievements and milestones, big and small and promote a sense of unity rather than competition. We believe dancers are like flowers and will all bloom in their own time.
05
Dancing is a team sport
The Main St Funk community is a village and each dancer’s class is their team. A successful dancing journey takes teamwork and an equal level of dedication from all involved. Team work in dance looks like; showing up to practice, wearing your uniform with pride, giving your all and cheering for your classmates. Dancing is a collaboration between teachers, students and parents. We all have a role to play at Main St Funk.
06
No one dancer is the star
At Main St Funk we make a conscious effort to ensure every dancer is treated with equal respect and opportunity. No matter their experience level or talent, every child deserves the chance to shine and excel in their own way. We endeavour to make every dancer within our organisation feel special, seen and like they are “The Star” because they are the main character of their own story.
07
Kind is Cool
We sprinkle kindness like confetti at Main St Funk. Our team leads by example, treating every student and family equally with care and respect. We teach our dancers empathy, patience, and the importance of uplifting one another. Kindness always comes first, and at Main St Funk, if you have an orange spot, you always have a friend. The coolest kids are the kindest kids and the coolest kids dance at Main St Funk.
